In today’s fast-paced workplaces, leaders are expected to support their teams not just with direction, but with development. Coaching is one of the most effective tools for doing this and the GROW model is one of the simplest ways to start.

So what is the GROW model?

GROW is a structured coaching framework that helps guide conversations in a clear, goal-oriented way. It stands for:

  • G: Goal
  • R: Reality
  • O: Options
  • W: Way Forward

 G:  What is their GOAL?

This is about helping your team member get really clear on the desired outcome. It gives you both clarity on what the purpose of the interaction is.

Sample questions:

  • What would you like to achieve?
  • What does success look like for you?
  • If we were having this conversation six months from now, what would be different?
  • What do you want to walk away with today?

R: What’s the REALITY?

This stage encourages honest reflection on the current situation, challenges, and barriers. Leaders often jump to problem-solving too quickly. Exploring the present helps the coachee see the full picture before jumping to action.

Sample questions:

  • What’s happening right now?
  • What have you tried so far?
  • What’s getting in the way?
  • Who else is involved?

O: What are the OPTIONS?

Here, you support the person in generating possible ways forward. This is about expanding their thinking rather than offering solutions.

Sample questions:

  • What could you try?
  • What else might work?
  • What resources or support do you have?
  • If nothing were off the table, what would you do?

W: What is the best WAY FORWARD?

This final step is about committing to specific actions. This step is helping them to turn insight into implementation.

Sample questions:

  • What will you do next?
  • When will you do it?
  • What might get in your way and how will you manage that?
  • How will you hold yourself accountable?

As a leader, developing your coaching mindset can shift how your team thinks, acts, and grows. The GROW model is a great place to start, one conversation at a time.
